Influential figures in Brazilian jiu-jitsu
An index of people whose work measurably changed what happens on the mat. It is organised by contribution rather than ordered by greatness, because greatness lists are arguments dressed as facts.
Why this is not a ranking
Ranking grapplers across eras requires comparing incomparable things: different rulesets, different competition depth, different eras of information access, different weight classes, different career lengths, and in several cases careers split between sport grappling and mixed martial arts. Any ordered list of the greatest is really a list of the criteria the author chose and did not disclose.
So this index states, for each person, what specifically they are understood to have contributed and on what basis. Where a claim about influence is contested or hard to evidence, it is labelled as such. Where something is tradition or gym lore rather than documented fact, it is labelled as that too.

- Every biographical claim is sourced, and the sources are listed on the entry.
- Competition results are cited to official records or recognised archives where those exist.
- No quotation is used unless it is documented and attributed. We do not paraphrase a person into quotation marks.
- No interview is presented that did not happen. No endorsement is implied by anyone.
- Living people are covered fairly, without repeating rumour and without speculating about private motives.
- Contested history is presented as contested, including where the disagreement is between credible accounts.
- No photograph of any practitioner is used without a documented licence.

No entry is published yet. Biographies of real, living people are the highest-risk content on a site like this and the easiest to get quietly wrong, so each one goes through source verification before it appears rather than after somebody complains.
