The problem

Someone is trying to establish stable control past your legs. Retention is everything you do to stop that happening, and it is distinct from recovering once it has partly happened.

Taught as a set of emergency recoveries, retention produces people who own a large catalogue of saves and still get passed. The catalogue is a symptom of acting late.

Objective

Keep your knee line between you and the passer, using the cheapest available intervention, for as long as possible โ€” while remaining a threat, so that pressure costs the passer something.

Core concept

Three variables are in play at all times: the frames between you, the angle of your hips relative to their line of travel, and the distance they have to cross. They are coupled. Losing distance makes frames harder to build; losing angle makes distance harder to recover.

That coupling is why retention appears to collapse all at once rather than degrading gradually, and why a single recovery rarely rescues a position that has already lost two of the three.

Key mechanics

  1. Frame with structure. Elbow stacked under the shoulder, load travelling through bone. If it tires you within seconds it is a push, not a frame.
  2. Point the knee line. Hips turned so your knees face their centre reduces their passing options to roughly one side. Square hips defend every direction and therefore none.
  3. Hold distance early. Distance is the cheapest variable to keep and the most expensive to recover. Most named guards are distance-management systems.
  4. Read load through contact. A loaded frame tells you the direction of pressure before you could see it. Anticipation at high level is mostly this.
  5. Threaten. Retention that never attacks gives the passer unlimited free attempts.

Common errors

  • Straight-arm framing with an unsupported elbow. Collapses and risks the joint.
  • Flat hips. Turn before you need to.
  • Waiting for a nameable position before acting. Retention lives in the transitions.
  • Fighting the pass instead of the grip that set it up.
  • Inverting as a default rather than as a specific tool.

Safety

Retention drills load the neck, lower back and knees repeatedly, and inversion adds cervical load that accumulates over years rather than announcing itself. Build at low intensity with a cooperative partner before adding resistance, and treat tingling, numbness or joint pain as a reason to stop.

Training progression

  1. Passer starts in a fixed position. Your only goal is to re-establish the knee line. No sweeps, no submissions.
  2. Raise resistance in stages. Going straight to full intensity teaches panic rather than mechanics.
  3. Constrain yourself: retain without hands, or without inverting. Removing your best tool exposes what it was covering.
  4. Start already compromised โ€” hips flat, one leg passed. This is where the learning is.
  5. Reintroduce sweeps and attacks so pressure has a cost.
